The HANKY CODE, also known as the hankerchief code, was a way for individuals in the gay leather and BDSM community, particularly during the 1970's and 1980's, to discreetly communicate their sexual interests and fetishes to potential partners in a public setting. The color of the handkerchief, as well as the side it was worn on, conveyed specific meanings.
